David Watkyns is a songwriter and musician from Cape Town, South Africa.
Born June 21st, 1989, David was surrounded by a musical family. His father was a songwriter and performer with Cape Town band Kerygma and his three siblings are all multi-instrumentalist.
Starting piano at 7 years old and trumpet at 8, David attended Beau Soleil Music Center and was involved in the music and drama at Pinelands High School.
After high school he graduated Bachelors of Music from University of Cape Town in Jazz Studies and winner of MELA Legends Award for "Contribution by youth to South African Music Industry".
Before his debut release as a solo recording artist, David was best known for his performances with Arno Carstens and Springbok Nude Girls.
As well as performances with Mike Rutherford (Genesis, Mike and The Mechanics), Zolani Mahola, Mathew Gold, and others, with performances across Africa, Europe and Asia, including Isle of Wight Festival (UK), St Paul's Cathedral (UK), Oppikoppi (SA), Rocking the Daisies (SA).
Influenced by Chet Baker, Elton John, Billy Joel, The 1975, Paul Simon and songwriters Andrew Wyatt, Gregg Alexander; David's music is piano/keyboard driven with classic instrumentation, big trumpet solos and lyrics of love, lust and loss.
